Artificial hedges hold up well in wind when two things are right: the fixing spacing and the format choice. Panels fixed at 6 to 9 points each stay put in normal conditions, and the correct format for your exposure level matters more than foliage style. Here is how to specify for windy sites.

How wind actually affects hedge panels

A fixed panel is a sail only if it can flex away from its fixings. Failures happen at corners first: a corner lifts, wind gets behind the panel, and the load multiplies. The fix is boringly simple: more fixing points, corners first. On exposed sites run fixings at every grid intersection along the top edge and corners, roughly every 10 to 12 inches, using UV-rated zip ties on mesh or screws on timber from the install parts range. Format by exposure level

Sheltered yards and standard fences: any format from the green wall panel range, standard fixing. Open sites and top-of-fence extensions: hedge panels with dense fixing, or ivy rolls which pass more air through than solid foliage faces. Freestanding hedges and wind

Freestanding portable hedges in weighted planters are stable in typical conditions. For exposed positions, use the metal planter option and add sand ballast; on rooftops and piers, position hedges against a wall or balustrade rather than mid-space, and wheel them in during storms; that mobility is the point of the wheeled planter.

The pre-install check

Walk the site on a windy day and note where you feel gusts funnel; corridors between buildings and fence corners take multiples of the open-field load.
