What NFPA 701 tests

A pass or fail flame test

A sample is exposed to a flame and assessed on how far the flame spreads, how long it keeps burning once the flame is removed, and whether burning material drips.

It belongs to one product

The result applies to the material tested. That is why a certificate covers a specific product, not a brand or a whole range.

Two test methods

One method is for lighter single-layer materials and one for heavier or multilayer materials.

When do you need fire-rated greenery?

Usually required

Indoor commercial and public spaces such as hospitality fit-outs, retail interiors, lobbies and event venues, where the local fire code or project specification calls up NFPA 701.

Usually not required

Residential gardens, private fences, balconies and most outdoor domestic uses. Standard UV-rated panels from the green wall range are the right product there.

Always check

The project fire engineer, architect or local authority has the final word. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, building class and even by floor.

Fire rating vs UV rating

UV rating

Protects foliage color from sun degradation. Our UV-rated foliage is SGS UV-tested to 5,000 hours

Fire rating

Governs how the material behaves in a flame test. US projects usually call for NFPA 701

Can one product have both?

Yes. The listed NFPA 701 panels are also UV-rated for indoor and outdoor use, which suits covered commercial terraces

Does a rating approve my installation?

No. A fire-performance result covers the material tested. Approval for a building or installation comes from your fire marshal or engineer

How to specify fire-rated greenery

  1. Share the fire specification

Send the fire requirement from your project documents with the wall dimensions.

  2. We match a rated product

We confirm the rated product, quantities and lead time. If your design calls for a look outside the rated range, we suggest the closest NFPA 701 rated match.

  3. Get the certificate

Request the NFPA 701 certificate for the exact product for your compliance file.

Fire rating FAQs

What is NFPA 701?

NFPA 701 is the National Fire Protection Association flame propagation test for textiles and films used as decorative materials. It is pass or fail, and fire marshals commonly require it in restaurants, hotels, offices and other assembly spaces.

Which DVG USA products are NFPA 701 rated?

Our NFPA 701 rated products are the 35" x 35" Tropical Forest and Tropical Vibe panels, the 40" x 40" extra dense boxwood panel on a metal frame, the Floral Fusion and extra dense boxwood 40" x 40" panels, and 15 hanging garland bush sets. The full list is on this page.

Are all your green walls fire rated?

No. Standard panels are UV-rated but not fire certified. Only products whose page states NFPA 701 are rated.

Can you send a fire certificate?

Yes. Use the certificate request form on this page with the product and project details, and we will email the NFPA 701 certificate for that exact product.

Is a foreign fire test the same as NFPA 701?

No. A rating to a foreign standard is not NFPA 701 compliance. If your project calls for NFPA 701, you need NFPA 701 documentation for the exact product.

Can a product that is not rated be supplied fire-retardant?

Some product pages list a fire-retardant or made-to-order option, for example the jasmine hedge screen roll and the monumental coconut palm. Confirm the option and its supporting documents in your quote before ordering.

Do I need fire-rated panels for my backyard?

Usually not. Residential gardens, fences and balconies rarely require NFPA 701. Standard UV-rated panels are the right choice there.
