Yes, unprotected artificial plants fade in direct sun, sometimes within a single summer. Fading happens when UV radiation breaks down the pigment inside the plastic foliage. Plants made with UV inhibitors mixed through the leaf material resist this for years, while sprayed-on coatings or untreated foliage do not.
Why artificial plants fade
Most artificial foliage is molded from polyethylene. UV radiation attacks the polymer chains and the green pigment inside them, a process called photodegradation. The visible result is foliage that shifts from deep green toward pale yellow or grey-white, and leaves that turn brittle and shed. Heat accelerates it, which is why a panel on a west-facing wall in Phoenix or Miami ages faster than the same panel on a shaded porch in Seattle.
In-leaf UV inhibitors vs sprayed coatings
There are two ways manufacturers protect foliage, and they are not equal:
- In-leaf UV inhibitors. UV stabilizers are compounded into the plastic before the leaf is molded, so the protection runs all the way through the material. It cannot wash off, rub off or wear off. This is the method used across our UV resistant outdoor range and our UV hedge panels.
- Sprayed UV coatings. A surface treatment applied after molding. It works at first, but rain, cleaning and abrasion strip it over time, and the unprotected plastic underneath then fades quickly and often unevenly.
If a product listing says "UV protected" without saying how, ask. The difference shows up in year two, not week two.
How your location changes the math
UV load varies a lot across the US. High-altitude and southern locations (Denver, Phoenix, southern California, Florida) see substantially more annual UV than the Northeast or Pacific Northwest. Orientation matters too: a south- or west-facing installation takes the most exposure, while a north-facing wall or covered patio takes a fraction of it. In lower-exposure spots, even standard foliage lasts a long time. In high-exposure spots, UV-stabilised foliage is not optional.
What realistic aging looks like
No plastic is immune to sunlight forever. The honest difference is how it ages. Quality UV-stabilised foliage mellows slowly and evenly over years, which reads as natural. Unprotected foliage fails blotchily, with sun-struck sections bleaching while shaded sections stay green, which is what makes a hedge look obviously fake. Darker, single-tone greens also tend to hold color longer than bright or variegated tones, so if your site is brutal sun all day, lean toward deeper green styles.
How to check before you commit
- Confirm the product page states UV-stabilised or UV resistant foliage, and check the warranty terms on the listing.
- Order a $15 sample panel and leave it in the exact spot you plan to cover for a few weeks. You will see how the color reads in your light before spending on full coverage.

Can you add UV protection yourself?
Yes, as a top-up. A UV protection spray adds a sacrificial surface layer that absorbs UV before it reaches the leaf. Used on already UV-stabilised foliage in a high-exposure spot, it is a sensible extra margin. Used on foliage that was moved outdoors from an indoor range, it meaningfully slows fading. What it is not is a substitute for in-leaf protection: like any surface treatment, it weathers off and needs reapplying, typically each season for exposed installations. Buy the right foliage first, then spray if your site is punishing.
Three placement habits that slow fading further
- Where you have a choice, favor north- or east-facing surfaces over west-facing ones.
