Artificial boxwood topiary balls are sold in sets of two and come in three diameters: 11", 15" and 17". Sets start around $85 and run to roughly $250 for the largest flowering styles. Unlike panels, they are decorative objects rather than coverage, so the decision is about scale against the space and the planter, not square footage.
Sizing against the planter, not the room
The most common mistake is buying to fit a room and ignoring the pot. A topiary ball should read as roughly the same visual weight as the planter beneath it. An 11" ball on a large floor planter looks stranded; a 17" ball on a narrow pot looks top heavy and, outdoors, genuinely is.
- 11" suits table tops, console styling, shelf runs and window boxes. It is the size that works indoors without dominating.
- 15" is the entrance size. Paired either side of a door in matching planters it reads as deliberate rather than decorative.
- 17" is a floor-standing statement, and needs a substantial planter to carry it. This is the commercial and hospitality size.
They are sold in pairs for a reason. Topiary reads as intentional in symmetry and as an afterthought on its own, which is why entrances, gateposts and bar ends are where they earn their place.
The case against real clipped buxus
A real boxwood ball is one of the most demanding ornamentals you can own. It needs clipping two or three times a year to hold a sphere, and a single bad cut takes a season to grow out. That was always the trade-off. What changed is the disease pressure.
Boxwood blight, caused by the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata, was first confirmed in the US in North Carolina and Connecticut in 2011. It has since been recorded in more than 30 states and is estimated to put over 90% of US boxwood production at risk. Symptoms are dark leaf spots, stem lesions and rapid defoliation, often followed by death of the plant. It spreads readily through nursery stock, contaminated tools and even clothing, and it affects every species of Buxus.
Clipped specimens are particularly exposed, because the shears that maintain the shape are also the most common vector between plants. A matched pair of real buxus balls represents years of growth and shaping that a single infection can end in weeks. Artificial topiary removes that risk entirely, along with the clipping.
Outdoor performance
The foliage carries in-leaf UV inhibitors rather than a sprayed surface coating, which is the distinction that decides whether colour holds outdoors or chalks off within a season. The practical outdoor issue is not fading, it is wind. A ball is a sphere on a stem, which is the worst possible shape for catching gusts. Weight the planter properly. Ballast in the base costs nothing and prevents the single most common failure, which is a planter going over and taking the topiary with it.
Where they work
Entrances and porches in matched pairs. Restaurant and cafe frontages where planning restricts what can be fixed to the building. Reception desks and lift lobbies. Balconies, where nothing can be drilled and a freestanding planter is the only option, covered in balcony privacy without drilling. Topiary against hedges and panels
Topiary balls decorate. They do not screen. If the actual brief is privacy or hiding a boundary, the honest answer is a hedge panel against the fence or a freestanding portable hedge where nothing can be fixed. Maintenance
