A real hedge is usually cheaper to plant and more expensive to own. Artificial reverses that: higher on day one, then close to zero after. Over five years the deciding factors are maintenance labor, irrigation and replacement of failed plants, plus the years of screening you do not get while a real hedge is still growing in.
Compare like for like
The common mistake is comparing a mature artificial hedge against nursery tube stock. They are not the same product. Tube stock is cheap because it is small, and it delivers no privacy for several seasons. To compare fairly, either price real hedging at the size that screens immediately, which is advanced stock and expensive, or count the years of no privacy as part of the cost of the cheaper option.
Where the money goes on a real hedge
Get local quotes rather than trusting any national average, but budget for all of these, not just the plants: soil preparation and planting labor, irrigation installation and the water it uses, feeding, trimming two or three times a year either as your time or a contractor's, and replacement of the plants that fail. In a run of hedging, some plants always fail, and a gap in an established hedge is slow and awkward to fix. Trimming labor is the item most people leave out, and over five years it is usually the largest single line.
The disease risk nobody budgets for
If the hedge in question is boxwood, there is a further factor. Boxwood blight, a fungal disease caused by Calonectria pseudonaviculata, was first confirmed in the US in North Carolina and Connecticut in 2011 and has since been recorded in more than 30 states, with researchers estimating it puts over 90% of US boxwood production at risk. It causes rapid defoliation and can kill the plant, it affects all species of Buxus, and it spreads on nursery stock, tools and clothing. A mature boxwood hedge represents years of growth that a single infection can end. That risk does not appear on any quote, and it is one reason artificial boxwood has grown faster than other styles. Where the money goes on an artificial hedge
Panels or rolls, fixings, and the labor to put them up, which for most residential fence runs is a weekend of your own time. After that: an occasional rinse. No water, no feeding, no trimming, no replacement, no seasonal thinning, no bare patches in winter. The running cost is close enough to zero that it barely enters a five-year comparison. Where a real hedge still wins
Being straight about this matters. A real hedge grows, so it fills gaps over time and gets better with age. It supports insects and birds, absorbs some noise as it thickens, and adds the specific value that a planted garden carries. If you have the years, the water, the soil and the appetite for maintenance, and you want the ecological function, plant it. Artificial does not replace that.
Where artificial wins clearly
Rentals and anywhere you cannot dig. Full shade and against-the-fence positions where nothing grows evenly. Balconies, courtyards and roof spaces with no soil and weight limits. Sites where you need the screening finished this week rather than in four years. Commercial frontages that must look identical year-round with no maintenance visit budgeted. And any position where irrigation is impractical.
How to decide in one question
Ask what the screening is worth to you in year one. If the answer is a lot, the real hedge's lower planting cost is misleading, because you are paying for something that does not do the job yet.
